Many distilleries cut their hours or close on some days between November and March, and several close over Christmas and New Year. These are the winter times on the distilleries’ own websites.
Almost never. Nearly every distillery that states a rule keeps pet dogs out of the production areas, so tours are closed to them. Some let registered assistance dogs join, and a few do not: Benbecula and Bladnoch say even service or guide dogs cannot join their tours. The shop, bar, cafe or grounds are where dogs are usually welcome.
We have checked nine on Islay: Ardnahoe, Ardbeg, Bowmore, Bruichladdich, Bunnahabhain, Caol Ila, Kilchoman, Lagavulin and Laphroaig. Each lets dogs into a public space such as the shop, bar, cafe or visitor centre, and where a distillery gives a tour rule, pet dogs are not allowed on tours. Ardbeg’s dogs-in-the-shop rule excludes its tasting areas and cafe. We could not confirm a rule for Jura, Laggan Bay or Port Ellen.
No. Each distillery sets its own rule, so see the Speyside section for the ones we have checked. Cardhu, GlenAllachie, Benromach, Dunphail and Ballindalloch welcome dogs in the shop, bar or visitor centre, Glenfiddich and Glen Moray are outdoors only, and Speyburn and Glen Grant allow assistance dogs only.
Take turns. At Isle of Harris Distillery the experiences are for people only, and it asks that one of your party stays with the dog, who can sit by the fire, in the shop or in the cafe. Most distilleries on this page let a dog wait in the shop or bar, so check the card first.
Often, yes. Many distilleries allow registered assistance dogs into the shop and sometimes on tours, but keep them out of the production areas. Tell the distillery before you book, and read the card for the rule it states.
Many are, often on shorter days. When we checked on 2 November 2026: Laphroaig is open daily 09:45 to 16:30 in November and Monday to Friday in December, and closed from 24 December to 5 January. Ardbeg is open Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 5pm, from November to April, and closed from 22 December 2026 to 4 January 2027. Glen Moray is open Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm, from October to the end of April. Lindores Abbey is open Wednesday to Sunday from November to February. Phone before you go.
We only list a distillery when its own website or an official page gives a dog rule we can quote. If we could not find one, the distillery is named under “Not confirmed” in its stretch. If you know of a rule we have missed, send it to us on the corrections page.
We read each distillery’s own website, or an official page of the company that owns it, and quote what it says. Where a distillery told us its rule by email, the card says so. Third-party sites, reviews and dog directories do not count. Where the rule is missing or two pages disagree we say so. If a rule has changed, tell us.
