Can I take my dog to see the Cairngorm reindeer?

Not into the reindeer areas. The Cairngorm Reindeer Herd does not allow any dogs, including assistance dogs, on the Hill Trip or in the Paddocks, because dogs make reindeer nervous. Dogs are welcome in the shop, and your group can take turns while someone waits outside with the dog.

Are dogs allowed on the Strathspey Railway?

Yes. Dogs travel for £3 each but cannot go in First Class or the dining areas. Assistance dogs travel free and can go anywhere on the train.

Can dogs go up the Cairngorm funicular?

Pet dogs cannot ride the funicular up. If you walk up with your dog, Cairngorm Mountain lets you into the Top Station and you can ride down together, with your dog on a lead.

When do dogs need a lead in the Cairngorms forests?

Ground-nesting birds such as capercaillie breed in spring and summer. Glenmore asks for leads from 1 April to 31 August, Uath Lochans from 1 April to 15 August and RSPB Loch Garten from 1 April to 31 August. Rothiemurchus has three dog off-lead areas, including one at Loch an Eilein.

Do dogs need to be on a lead?

Many walks and estates here ask for leads, especially near livestock and ground-nesting birds from April to July. Follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code and any local signs.
